Pause, Not Punishment - Suicide Prevention & Firearm Safety

This presentation focuses on practical, voluntary suicide prevention strategies within the firearm community—centered on safety, trust, and responsibility.

We’ll discuss how Pause Plans can help create time, distance, and connection during periods of heightened stress or crisis—without punishment, shame, or permanent loss of rights.

Designed for those who sell, use, store, and respect firearms, this training supports safer communities while honoring individual responsibility and Second Amendment values.

What is a Pause Plan?

A Pause Plan is a proactive safety step—not a punishment.

A Pause Plan is:

  • Temporary and voluntary
  • Intended to reduce immediate risk during a crisis
  • Strongest when created before a crisis escalates
  • Built on trust, planning, and shared responsibility

A Pause Plan helps create:

  • Time – slowing things down during intense moments
  • Distance – safe, temporary separation from lethal means
  • Connection – involving trusted people and support

Why it Matters

  • Many suicide crises are short-term but high-risk
  • Firearm access greatly increases lethality during a crisis
  • Simple, voluntary steps can save lives without permanent consequences
  • Firearm communities play a key role in prevention

What You'll Gain

  • Practical guidance for conversations with customers, peers, and family
  • Real-world examples relevant to FFLs, ranges, and gun shops
  • Tools that protect life without stigma or mandates
  • Resources to share within your community
