A Crookes Folk Club presentation at The Princess Royal, 43 Slinn Street, Sheffield, S10 1NW.*TICKETING & DOOR POLICY*
Whilst we occasionally run ticketed Friday Night Specials, entry for our regular weekly Thursday club nights is on a first-come-first-served basis and unticketed and we do not take advanced seat bookings.
Entry for regular club nights is free, we pay our guests by way of a *CASH* collection. Whilst we understand that some simply haven't the means to make a contribution and absolutely DO NOT wish to exclude them, we expect those who can to make as generous a donation as they are able in recognition of our guest's work.
*PLEASE CHECK FOR UPDATES BEFORE SETTING OUT*
Life is full of unexpected ups and downs, illness, weather and other unexpected things can spoil the best made plans. We may sometimes have to change our guest at short notice, or even cancel an evening altogether. To avoid disappointment please re-visit the relevant night's event for updates *BEFORE* setting out.
*PAULA RYAN
Paula is a compelling SINGER-SONGWRITER, born and bred in Tipperary, Ireland, whose POWERFUL, insightful songs are inspired by the LYRICISM and musical PASSION of her Irish Gaelic ROOTS & driven by the FUNKY rhythmic influences and “WACKY” instruments of music from other cultures.
Paula charms and beguiles audiences with: sheer delight in music-making, unmistakeable joy of singing, potent, thought provoking lyrics, and lively Celtic wit and humour!
Paula's “story-telling” intros and her sometimes serious, sometimes amusing, sometimes reflective, sometimes lively, but always sensitive to the song and the music, presentation of her own original material alongside well know favourites is FOLK ENTERTAINMENT AT ITS BEST! There's always plenty of sing-along choruses and lots to join in with!
To accompany her songs, Paula plays Guitar and Marimba and her skilful use of a variety of rhythmic instruments including Bodhran, Djembe and Darabuka demonstrates her clear understanding of the function of percussion in folk music.
Paula's songs have received air-play on radio and TV in the UK (BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio York, Radio Warwickshire, Newcastle Roots Music Radio, WFM Radio in Manchester, BCB 106.6 Bradford), Ireland (Tipp FM, Tipperary Mid West FM) and the USA (Channel 10 TV, Princeton). Paula has also had considerable success in some of America’s biggest song contests with both ‘The Red Rose’ and ‘The Faintest Touch’ receiving Honor Awards from the Great American Song Contest. Paula's songs 'Havin The Craic' and 'Suantrai Donnacha' have reached the final of the prestigious Pan Celtic Irish National Song Contest in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
Paula has played at folk clubs, venues and festivals in Ireland, England, Scotland, France, Germany and the USA. Wherever she performs, Paula charms and beguiles audiences with sheer delight in music-making, unmistakeable joy of singing, potent, thought provoking lyrics, plenty of choruses to sing along to, lots of opportunities to join in, and a lively Celtic wit and humour!
