About this Event

One of the most arresting male jazz vocalists since Mark Murphy, Philadelphian Paul Jost has been turning heads on the scene with his freewheeling scatting and storytelling abilities along with his unbridled urge to swing. A former drummer who performed with such legendary artists as Ron Carter, Dr. John, Billy Eckstine, Bucky Pizzarelli and Joe Farrell, Jost reinvented himself as a singer with the 2015 release of his vocal debut album, Breaking Through. His 2019 follow-up, Simple Life, found him reinterpreting songs by Lennon and McCartney, Bob Dylan, Sonny Rollins, Ray Nobel, Duke Ellington and Jerome Kern, as well as showcasing a couple of his originals. Jost returns to the Exit Zero Jazz Festival in the wake of his 2021 release, While We Were Gone, recorded live at the Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn.

The Sound

Fronting his longstanding quartet of pianist Jim Ridl, bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Tim Horner, augmented here by guitarist extraordinaire Pete McCann, Jost will defy expectations at every turn with his extraordinary ability to shift gears on a dime, scat a blue streak and bring unbridled passion to a ballad. Expect to hear his poignant reading of Michel Legrand’s “You Must Believe in Spring,” his scat-fueled romp through “Bye Bye Blackbird” and his hauntingly poignant readings of “The Nearness of You” and “We’ll Be Together Again,” along with a couple of curveballs along the way.

Attendees of the Exit Zero Jazz Festival know this band brings the heat! Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy this very special concert in the intimacy of Carney's Other Room.
