Instructor - Helena Romanovsky
Helena has been in the apparel manufacturing business for over 40 years. Entering the field as a sample-maker, she worked her way up to designing technical apparel patterns for Brands like Susan Bristol, JJill, Brass Clothing, Bennet & Co, and Sterlingwear. She has been teaching technical design and pattern-making since 2012. In her spare time, she quilts, paints watercolors, and is an extreme gardener.
Class Description
Patternmaking 101 will give students the knowledge of how to create basic blocks and how they are used to make stylized personal patterns. In this class students will learn what measurements they need to make a shirt pattern, how measurements translate into pattern shapes, and learn how to recognize style and body shape relationships.
Class Goals
The goal of this class is to provide students with the knowledge of how to draft basic men's shirt pattern, what information is needed for it, and how to create your own style using a pattern block. Students will learn how to pick the fabric for making shirt, spreading, and cutting. We will talk about construction that can be used for this type of clothing and equipment for making it.
Materials Provided
- The instructor's knowledge and expertise.
- A bag with most of the needed tools: rulers, pattern paper, and more.
- Gift with each tool set!
Material Fee
The materials fee for this class is $40. This will be paid directly to the instructor at the start of the class. This instructor accepts Venmo and Cash.
Students Should Provide
A positive attitude. If a student has already taken any of Helena's PATTERNMAKING classes at A2 and has a tool set, the only thing needed to bring is 3-5 yards of patternmaking dotted paper.
Tools required for the course:
- Set of French curved rulers including hip rulers, neckline ruler, waist ruler, contoured dart ruler, and armhole ruler.
- Measuring tape
- Clear straight ruler
- Tracing wheel
- Awl tool
- Mechanical pencil w leads
- Bended ruler
- Seam allowances ruler
- Eraser
- 3-5 Yards of patternmaking dotted paper
Prerequisites
Students must be 16 years old or older. All students under 18 must be accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.
