About this Event

Explore Albany's history through creative investigations of archives: free lecture series "Documenting Untold Stories. " Talks include a workshop on data derived from historic handwriting in Albany 17th-19th centuries, and information on archives and preservation grants writing. The talks and workshop will be held at King's Place (on the Ten Broeck Mansion campus).

Program Schedule:

12 pm: Chelsea Teale, Associate Director, New Netherland Research Center, An Untold Story: The Lost Journal of Kiliaen van Rensselaer. Dr. Teale discusses the discovery of a 1685 journal of the last patroon/first lord of Rensselaerswijck in a Long Island library after "following some breadcrumbs" starting in the NYS Library Manuscripts and Special Collections. The journal documents how he prepared for his journey from the Netherlands to New York, and provides insight into the what was important to people coming to Albany.

1 pm: Devin Lander, New York State Historian, Planning for New York’s Commemoration of the American Revolution. New York State Historian Devin Lander will discuss current planning underway for New York State’s commemoration of the American Revolution and the inclusive themes being considered to ensure that previously marginalized communities and stories are centered during the commemorative era.

2 pm: Paul A. Miller, Documentary Filmmaker, The Story of 'Searching for Timbuctoo' Documentary filmmaker Paul Miller shares the Capital Region connections that inspired his film "Searching for Timbuctoo." The historical documentary tells the little-known story of a Black settlement in the Adirondacks that brough together a group of ardent abolitionists willing to risk their fortunes, their families and their futures to bring down slavery.

3 pm: Documenting Untold Stories: Stories from Historic Handwriting and Archives/Preservation Grant Writing Workshop, Aaron Bradt, ACHA Collections Associate and Kathryn Kosto, ACHA Executive Director.

About the Speakers:

Aaron Bradt is the Collections Associate at the Albany County Historical Association | Ten Broeck Mansion. He hascoordinated a team of volunteers to digitize and transcribe the ACHA’s manuscript collections; to date over 2200 images have been uploaded to the NY Heritage database. He holds a MA in Public History and a MS in Information Science specializing in Archives and Records Administration from the SUNY Albany.

Kathryn Kosto is the Albany County Historical Association's Executive Director. She previously served as curator of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow House (Cambridge MA), and an archives specialists with the papers of Frederick Law Olmsted (Brookline MA). She studied 18th century Dutch at Leiden University (Netherlands). She holds a BA in history and the history of art from Yale University and a MA in history from Cornell University.

Devin Lander is New York’s 16th State Historian and Head of Museum Chartering for the State Education Department. He holds a BA in History from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and a MA in Public History from the University at Albany where he is currently completing work on his PhD dissertation on the Millbrook Commune of the 1960s. https://nysm.nysed.gov/research-collections/state-history/devin-r-lander

Paul A. Miller is an independent writer, photographer and filmmaker based in upstate New York. As an experienced television professional, he worked for national shows and networks including The History Channel, National Geographic Channel, PBS, and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” www.timbuctoofilm.com/the-film

Dr. Chelsea Teale is a historical geographer with degrees from SUNY Geneseo, Syracuse, and Penn State. After teaching at Humboldt State University in California for the past decade, she recently joined the New Netherland Research Center in Albany’s Cultural Education Center. Her research interests include environmental history, mapping features of Dutch New York, and finding unpublished documents that shed more light on New Netherland’s people, places, and things. www.newnetherlandinstitute.org/about-nni/about-the-nnrc
