OUR SPEAKER and after our AGM will be held Tuesday 18th November 2025.
OUR SPEAKER Pat Baker, who is a distinguished WA underwater photographer and maritime archaeologist and whose work has played a significant role in documenting and interpreting shipwrecks across Australia, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
Contributing to the archaeological investigation and visual documentation of The Mary Rose in England, the Batavia (1629) off the WA coast, and numerous other wrecks spanning several centuries of maritime trade and travel.
Pat Baker became known for a distinctive photographic approach that combined technical precision with a strong sense of narrative and scientific record but also brought the stories of shipwrecks to broader audiences through public exhibitions, museum collections, and educational publications.
THE SUBJECT
Hugh Edwards (1932–2024) was an Australian author, journalist, and underwater explorer who played a pivotal role in bringing global attention to WA maritime history.
Working alongside local divers, historians, and maritime enthusiasts, he helped locate and identify several historically significant wrecks, including the Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon, wrecked 1656), Batavia (wrecked 1629), and Zeewijk (wrecked 1727).
Edwards’ most celebrated book, The Isle of Angry Ghosts (1966), recounts the aftermath of the Batavia wreck and the brutal mutiny and struggle for survival among its survivors on the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.
Dramatic, deeply researched, and vividly written, the book became a bestseller and remains one of the most influential popular histories of maritime violence and endurance in Australia.
