Paste papers are one of the earliest methods used to decorate paper. From the late 16th century through to the 18th century they were used as book covers and as end sheets.
In this workshop you will make textured papers by applying brushes, hand tools or domestic objects to the surface of paper or card that has been coated with thin coloured paste. The paste is worked, scraped, and patterned when it is still wet.
These decorative paste papers will become the covers for the button hole bound notebooks which will form the second part of this workshop. Button hole stitch binding is a non-adhesive type of open spine binding. It is great for sketchbooks, journals and notebooks.
Paste papers can also be used for gift wrap or as stand-alone prints. Button hole stitch binding is s simple sewn binding. Both require no previous knowledge or experience so work for beginners or people who want to play and try something new.
- Tools, equipment and a range of materials will be provided.
- Tea, coffee, and light snacks will be provided but do bring your lunch with you.
- Wear old, warm clothes
The workshop will be held in my studio which is part of the Outer Spaces network at 3 Redheughs Avenue, Edinburgh, EH12 9RH. Outer Spaces at Edinburgh Park is in a repurposed commercial office space. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow print enthusiasts and share ideas while enjoying a creative and relaxed atmosphere.
