Meter Madness is a hands-on workshop designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of rhythm, timing, and ensemble playing through the study of duple and triple meter as they relate to West African drumming. Participants will explore how these rhythmic frameworks influence the feel and structure of traditional rhythms while developing a deeper understanding of pulse, groove, and ensemble interaction. This workshop is well suited for drummers, percussionists, educators, and anyone interested in building a stronger rhythmic foundation.Throughout the day, participants will work with 4-beat and 8-beat rhythmic patterns, learning how individual drum parts fit together within an ensemble. Attention will be given to rhythmic language and techniques that help develop timing, accuracy, and confidence. Through guided exercises, call-and-response activities, and group drumming, participants will strengthen their listening skills, coordination, and overall understanding of rhythm.
You will need your djembe and dununs for this class.
