Passion of the Cut Sleeve is a world-premiere interpreting ancient Chinese folklore and love stories through a modern queer and trans lens. This multidisciplinary show features theatre, poetry, movement, performance art, and live traditional Chinese music inspired by classic tales like Butterfly Lovers and Legend of the White Snake. 梁山伯與祝英臺 | Butterfly Lovers: A tragic folktale about two lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, whose love defies societal norms.
怜相伴|Lian Xiang Ban (Fragrant Companion): Two women meet at a temple and fall in love. One prays to be turned into a man so they can marry.
白蛇傳 | Legend of the White Snake: A famous Chinese myth about a snake demon, Bai Suzhen, who transforms into a woman and falls in love with a mortal man, Xu Xian.
牛郎織女 | Cowherd and Weaver They: The Chinese myth of the Cowherd (Niulang) and Weaver Girl (Zhinu) explores the love between two star-crossed lovers separated by the Milky Way, only allowed to meet once a year when a bridge of magpies form to unite them.
東方不敗|Dongfang BuBai: A fictional character from the novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. Often portrayed as a trans/gender non-conforming tale.
