Join us for the Parliamentary symposium on how Canada and other middle powers can preserve stability amid a changing global order.
About this Event

On May 28, the Institute for Peace & Diplomacy (IPD), the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), and the Offices of the Honourable Senator Yuen Pau Woo and the Honourable Senator Mohammad Khair Al Zaibak will host a parliamentary symposium titled “The Future of Middle Powers After the Rupture: Perspectives from Canada and Beyond” at the Senate of Canada, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
As Prime Minister Mark Carney noted in his address at the World Economic Forum, the international rules-based order is undergoing a profound rupture, driven by intensifying great-power competition, weaponized economic interdependence, and rising geopolitical fragmentation. This rupture has placed new pressure on middle powers to work collectively, preserve global stability, and help prevent the further erosion of global governance frameworks.
Convening a select group of parliamentarians, senior officials, ambassadors, and leading foreign policy experts, the event will explore how middle powers can balance national interests and core values while preserving alliance commitments and strategic autonomy in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
This is a by-invitation-only event.

If you would like to be considered, please register your interest by May 12, 2026 We will review submissions and confirm participation with selected attendees only. For any questions or inquiries regarding the event, please contact us at [email protected].
