Parikrama- The Journey Within is choreographed by Debapriya Das and performed by The Nrityakosh Company. Debapriya Das is founder and director of Nrityakosh, which has been in the forefront of belly dance community and movement in Bangalore for the last 8 years. Parikrama is a 60 minute contemporary oriental dance narrative on finding ground as belly dancer in India - a self reflecting movement dialogue with oneself from the perspective of a middle eastern dance practitioner. The archetype of the female belly dancing figure has been made popular by the mainstream media around the world. There are several character identities associated with this which leads to an understanding of what the dance form is and who can belly dance. Parikrama is an attempt to deconstruct this archetype and the role of popular culture by focusing on middle eastern folk dances, traditional dances and their contribution to what we call belly dance! The original music score for the production is by Pavan Annapragada & Jayesh Joshi. Parikrama was one of the commissioned projects for Abhivyakti City Art Project Edition 6 by the UNM Foundation. It was mentored by choreographer Kruti Mahesh. Parikrama premiered at the Abhivyakti festival in December 2024. The Nrityakosh Company is an award winning international oriental dance company. The company is known for feature-length productions with an innovative use of belly dance vocabulary to tell stories.
