About this Event

The Paradise Presents ... THE SUMMER SESSIONS. Join us in July and August as we explore musical styles and modes of performance in film. This screening series is split into two parts- each chronicling the distinctive cinematic language of a genre. Each month will feature one special edition of BAND AND A MOVIE! Throughout the summer we will be paying tribute to the transcendental work of documentary filmmaker Les Blank- known for his vivid portraits of traditional musicians. Selected screenings will be preceded by a Les Blank short relating to the month's genre.

VOL. II- BODY MEETS SOUL: a cinematic journey through jazz, rhythm and blues. We are ending the summer with the sounds of soul, as we pay tribute to jazz, rhythm & blues music in the 20th century and beyond.

OUR NEXT EDITION OF TOONIE TUESDAYS! A Quarterly special at the Paradise Theatre- classic crowd pleasers for only $2.00! We're kicking off Vol. II with Spike Lee's vibrant love letter to jazz music. Denzel Washington stars in 1990's MO' BETTER BLUES.

Financially irresponsible Giant (Spike Lee) manages a jazz group, but his sax player, Shadow (Wesley Snipes), wants to replace him with a better businessman. Bleak (Denzel Washington), the band's trumpeter, then tries to defend his close pal Giant, leading to a power struggle between the two musicians. Meanwhile, as Bleak tries to straighten things out with his band mates and manager, he also must choose to be with either sweet teacher Indigo (Joie Lee) or sultry singer Clarke (Cynda Williams).
