Parable of Belonging is being created now by the Wandering Ensemble (Dandelion Dancetheater and the CSUEB Inclusive Interdisciplinary Ensemble) and a diverse collection of students, scholars, teachers, artists, organizers, and community members.
Parable of Belonging is based on the books Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler and Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown, and will use inclusive performance to explore what life in the Bay Area (and all over Earth) could be like in 30 years. Octavia Butler imagined 30 years into her future from the 1990’s to write her Parable series. And now we are living in a version of the future she saw.
Parable of Belonging is an invitation for us to come together across disciplines, departments, colleges, religions, cultures, ways of knowing, creative forms, and identities to face the crises of our time and work together to develop sustainable, life-affirming, inclusive strategies of response.
We are looking for additional artists, activists, faculty, staff, student and community partners to join us in bringing this vision to life.
The project is directed by Eric Kupers with assistance by Bea Aguirre, Judge Cantrell, and Jasmine Guerrero. Written by Kimiko Guthrie and with additional contributions by faculty from diverse programs across CSUEB, Wandering Ensemble members, Laura Elaine Ellis, and the CSUEB Dance Ensemble, the piece will grow throughout the spring and we welcome your input!
Public performances will happen in April as a site-specific journey through the CORE building, as well as in full-length immersive performances in and around the CORE May 5th - 7th from 7 - 9pm.
Excerpts of the project will be shared at Highways Performance Space in Los Angeles April 17th - 19th, and at Ruth’s Table as part of the SF International Arts Festival on May 2nd.
