Hands-on paper marbling workshop art class series in the Book Arts studio!
In this *3 class* series, students will progress through three sessions from an introduction to the best practice, process and technical considerations of the medium and exploratory play with the art form to formulating their own size and working with gall and deliberate tools to comb, rake and gel-git as foundational skills for deliberate techniques. By the end of the session, students will understand how to pursue independent study of the art form and accomplish basic combing, drawing, stippling and the intricacies of more complex comb and rake techniques like Spotted Zebra, French Curl, Peacock and Italian Vein, as well as understanding how to apply different substrates.
Ebru, originating in Turkey between the 13-15th c. as an adaptation of previous Suminagashi and “painting on water” traditions of 8-12c China and Japan, is commonly referred to as Marbling. Its primary association is with end pages in bookmaking (originally used to prevent forgeries and erasure and eventually adopted to include ledger edges), but it has a rich tradition across Persia, Turkey, the Iberin Peninsula and into France and American literature arts in the modern day.
The practice relies on combining water and a plant-based sizing agent to “float” paints on top of a thickened solution, allowing the artist to create pools and puddles of color before manipulating them into patterns. An artist needs to have a light hand, refined taste and an open mind to the unexpected patterns forming on the water, an open mind and Patience.
