About this Event
Join us for the Panshanger County Balls Walk, also known as The Four Candles Walk, taking place on Saturday, December 6th, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Please arrive by 10:50 AM for a prompt start.
Step Into History
Experience the grandeur of the past as volunteer David leads us on a special journey, recreating an amalgamation of the County Balls held at Panshanger Mansion in 1876, 1879, 1883, and 1884 by the 7th Earl Cowper. Rub shoulders with Royalty, Aristocracy, Ambassadors, Politicians, local dignitaries, and the great and good of Hertfordshire as we recall the elegant dances and characters that once graced this historic house.
The Mansion Experience
Imagine waking up as a guest at Panshanger Mansion the following morning, greeted by sweeping views across Repton’s Broadwater. Picture yourself strolling along the terrace to the Orangery, perhaps wandering as far as the majestic Great Oak. Our walk around the house site offers the opportunity to reflect on what it might have been like to receive an invitation to one of these illustrious Balls.
Follow In Famous Footsteps
As we journey around the estate, we’ll trace the steps of these and other renowned guests who visited these celebrated grounds, such as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and Winston Churchill. This immersive event allows us to connect with the history and distinguished visitors of Panshanger.

Please remain composed; our responsibilities for the day are those of estate staff, and we should conduct ourselves accordingly!
The Mystery of the Four Candles
Curious about the meaning behind The Four Candles? You’ll have to join the walk to uncover that for yourself!
This easy-paced walk is approximately one and a half miles in length and mostly flat, with some sections along gravel or grassy paths. Please note that paths can be uneven, and weather conditions may make some areas muddy, so we recommend wearing appropriate footwear. Dogs are allowed if kept on a lead.
Parking is available at the Stables. Please meet us there, entering the park via the B1000 Tarmac entrance by the White Lodge (W3W//reward.year.also). After the walk, the parking area will be locked, so if you wish to continue exploring, please move your car to the Thieves Lane Car park or Panshanger Lane Car park (which are chargeable).
This event is FREE, but spaces are limited. To secure your spot, please book in advance.
