Department of Philosophy’s Research Seminars series resumes on Thursday 13 February Title: Panpsychism in Renaissance Philosophy
Speaker: Prof. Tomáš Nejeschleba (Palacký University Olomouc)
Date: Thursday 13 March 2025
Time: 17:30
Location: CHBO-417
Abstract :
Panpsychism as the doctrine of the omnipresence of mind/soul/spirit in the world has been undergoing its renaissance again since the 1970s. Contemporary panpsychism is not only related to the ideas of ancient thinkers or the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also – at least in name, to philosophy in the Renaissance. The lecture examines the panpsychic ideas of three Renaissance thinkers, Marsilio Ficino, Giordano Bruno and Francesco Patrizi, and notes the function of panpsychism in their philosophies, which differs from contemporary panpsychism, seeking a solution to the problem of the mind-body relation. At the same time, however, it attempts to identify moments of Renaissance panpsychism that might be useful for contemporary discourse.
