Panel discussion on artists’ estate planning, exploring how public collections acquire, integrate, and sustain artworks by deceased artists.
About this Event

The exhibition includes a small portion of the approximately 1,000 artworks ‘left behind’ following the artist’s untimely passing, in 2012, without having established specific plans for the distribution of artworks by any means (sale, donation, etc.).

Koffler Arts takes this exhibition as the opportunity to consider a topic that is rarely spoken about publicly, artists’ estate planning, from two perspectives. A panel discussion on Sunday, February 8th, featured four artists and a barrister/solicitor sharing insights about wills and estates. This second panel discussion, focuses on three public collections, with representatives addressing questions about:

  • the acquisition process for artworks by deceased artists (in conjunction with artists’ estates, gallerists, private collectors/donors, etc.);
  • integrating those artworks into public collections; and,
  • the sustainability of public collections.

Panelists include:

  • Stephanie Burdzy, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Canada
  • Stephan Jost, Michael and Sonja Koerner Director and CEO, Art Gallery of Ontario
  • Angela Brayham, Director, Rodman Art Institute of Niagara
