Pam Tillis is the daughter of Country Music legend Mel Tillis and multi-media artist Doris Tillis, but she long ago carved out her own place as a singer, songwriter, and actor. Her compositions have been recorded across Country, R&B, Bluegrass, and Rock, and her career spans music, film, television, and stage.
Her 1991 debut country album, Put Yourself in My Place, went gold and produced two No. 1 and two Top 5 singles. The follow-ups Homeward Looking Angel, Sweetheart’s Dance, and Greatest Hits were all certified platinum. During the 1990s country boom, Tillis scored six No. 1 hits, including “Shake the Sugar Tree,” “Mi Vida Loca,” “When You Walk in the Room,” “In Between Dances,” “Don’t Tell Me What to Do,” and her signature song, “Maybe It Was Memphis,” which has since been featured by contestants on American Idol and The Voice.
A CMA Female Vocalist of the Year winner, Tillis says her current chapter feels freer and more enjoyable, allowing her to focus on creativity and mentorship. She works closely with younger artists, including her all-female acoustic trio The Rose Rustlers, and values passing along lessons learned from decades of touring and navigating the industry.
Tillis also cherishes the camaraderie she’s found touring with fellow 1990s hitmakers Lorrie Morgan, Suzy Bogguss, and Terri Clark through projects like Grits and Glamour and Chicks With Hits. Beyond music, she’s built an impressive acting résumé, with credits including The Thing Called Love, Smokey Joe’s Café on Broadway, and TV appearances on LA Law, Diagnosis: Murder, and Nashville.
Her 2020 album Looking for a Feeling returns to her songwriting roots, reflecting a 1970s country-rock influence. A Grammy winner and Grand Ole Opry member, Tillis was nominated for the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. After more than three decades, she remains grateful, curious, and still standing.
