About this Event
The aim of this day is to celebrate the rich culture of our Palestinian siblings while also raising money and awareness for the PalMed GEM scheme (GEM (Gaza Educate Medics) – palmedacademy.com). All profits from the event will go to this cause.
The event will feature:
Cooking demonstration of traditional Palestinian recipes led by Serena Araj, a British Palestinian originally from Al-Makrour.
Dabke performance and workshop by the Habibi Dabke Troop.
The Habibi Dabke group was formed to showcase the beautiful cultural dance of the Levant region. Dabke is an artistic expression of resistance deeply embedded in our cultural identity, with each movement carrying historical and cultural significance. All our members have roots tied to the region, including members from Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon. We work together to spread the dance and music of our homelands.
Live music with Saied Silbak.
Saied Silbak is a Palestinian composer and oud player born in Shafaa`mr, in the lower Galilee of occupied Palestine. He began training in classical piano at the age of four, before moving onto the oud in his early teens to delve deep into the nuances at the base of Arabic music. Silbak has a unique understanding of different types of music, from Arabic, Turkish and Indian to classical Western styles.
His signature sound, created through his artful ability to fuse these styles together, has seen him perform around the world at festivals and concert series in the UK, Belgium, France, Palestine, Morocco, Argentina and beyond.
In recent years he has worked with many artists on interdisciplinary projects and has been involved in educational and community work, developing a politically and socially engaged practice.
The event will also offer catering from the Levant region, including halal options.
