Please note there are a number of options to get to the island for the swim start.1. A flotilla of paddlers will paddle from the Strand (launch in front of the Tobruk Pool) before the race. Please be ready on the beach to launch at 5:30am, no later. We will paddle over together as a group at gentle pace (circa 5km/hr to 6km/hr) to reach Picnic Bay at 7am or just after. If you rate yourself as a fast paddler join the racing circuit another day – this flotilla is about keeping together and watching out for each other.
As it will be dark when we launch, each kayak must have an all round white light on their boat (at a pinch a glowstick can work). An all round white light is the Queensland legislated requirement for kayaks travelling at night. It is also worth having a small waterproof hand or head torch in case of needing to signal – but you won’t use this otherwise.
2. For those unsure of the paddle over, The Barge ‘Hercules’ and vessel ‘’Rhino Dive’’ typically collect craft from Strand Park Beach (next to Picnic Bay Surf Lifesaving Clubhouse) at 6am Saturday and leave shortly after. Space on the barges is limited so if you are comfortable to paddle over, please do so. I will post weather forecasts as they come into view the week before the race.
3. Paddlers are of course welcome to make their own way over if they prefer.
