About this Event
The Kansas CityLatin Jazz Orchestra/Latin Jazz Institute presents its 9th International Jazz Day concert with the "Latin Side of Kansas City." This event is in conjunction with the United Nations & Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Global Celebrations. As the bastion of salsa and latin jazz in the Midwest, KCLJO represents the living heritage of Kansas City's jazz legacy and the Afro-Latin traditions through its apprenticeship and conservatory model. This concert will go beyond your typical jazz concert, featuring a selection of Bebop, Caribbean, South American, and Salsa & Latin Jazz classics. Special guests to be announced.
Founded by master percussionist Pablo Sanhueza and historian Cynthia Ammerman, KCLJO represents the culmination of over three decades of artistic leadership, education, and production in the Midwest. While formally incorporated in 2018, the organization launched its official programming in 2014 with our KC/US-Chile jazz exchange, which coincided with International Jazz Day and Jazz Appreciation Month. Since its inception, KCLJO has served as a vital conduit between the historic foundations of Kansas City jazz and the traditions of Latin American music.
In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people across the globe. Through this united effort, International Jazz Day is the one day each year that jazz is celebrated worldwide, bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities in 195 countries.
This event is produced by Cynthia Ammerman.
