About this Event

The 85th San Francisco Boat Race Dinner celebrates the 169th Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. Taking the form of a College Feast at an Oxbridge College, it is the one occasion each year when the alumni of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge convene for a large-scale event in northern California. Alumni, students, academic visitors and former employees of either university are invited to attend, along with their spouses, partners and guests. The evening is held in the elegant ambience of the University Club atop Nob Hill in the heart of San Francisco.

Harvard law professor, public intellectual, prolific writer, and a leading AI ethicist and tech advisor, Noah Feldman is considered one of the great minds and speakers of our time. Described as "one of the country’s most sought-after authorities," and "a public intellectual for our time," Feldman was named to Esquire’s list of the 75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century and has been called a "legal rock star" by the Wall Street Journal and "one of the stars of his generation" by Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan. He specializes in constitutional studies, with particular empahsis on power and ethics, design of innovative governances solutions, law and religion, and the history of legal ideas.

Feldman is the author of 10 critically acclaimed nonfiction books, including The Broken Constitution: Lincoln, Slavery and the Refounding of America, and his latest, out in March 2024, To Be A Jew Today: A New Guide to God, Israel, and the Jewish People. A policy and public affairs columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, Feldman also writes for The New York Review of Books and was a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine for nearly a decade. Through his consultancy, Feldman advises clients like Meta, eBay, Tiktok, and major AI startups on how to improve ethical decision-making by creating and implementing new governance solutions. In this capacity, he conceived and architected the Meta Oversight Board, and continues to advise the company on ethics and governance issues. In 2003, Feldman served as senior constitutional advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, and subsequently advised members of the Iraqi Governing Council on the drafting of Iraq’s interim constitution. In 2019, he addressed a global audience of 13 million as an expert in Donald Trump's impeachment hearings, where he was the first speaker.

Earning his A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard, Feldman finished first in his class. Selected as a Rhodes Scholar, he earned a D.Phil. from Oxford University, writing his dissertation on Aristotle’s Ethics and its Islamic reception. Feldman received his J.D. from Yale Law School, and clerked for Justice David Souter of the U.S. Supreme Court. He currently serves as Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law, Chair of the Society of Fellows, and founding director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Program on Jewish and Israeli Law, all at Harvard University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Co-chairs are Matthew Kaser (Linacre, Oxford) and Alex Driskill-Smith (Caius, Cambridge).

Cocktails are at 5:30 pm and dinner will be served at 7:15 pm. The Boat Race video will be played before dinner at 6:15 pm and again after dinner.

Dress - Black Tie or Boat Club Blazer Preferred

RSVP by May 6th, 2024 - but please book early because space is limited

The dinner, including wine, is $149 for adults and $139 for seniors and students. Special rates of $139 for adults and $129 for seniors and students are available for bookings made by April 16th, 2024. Due to limited space, please note there is a limit of one accompanying guest for each Oxford or Cambridge alumnus.
