Hello OWLs,
On May 8th at 10:00 am the OWLs will tour the Lockwood-Matthews Mansion Museum (295 West Avenue, Norwalk). The 62-room estate is regarded as one of the earliest and most significant Second Empire style country houses in New England - characterized by Greco-Roman motifs and grand monumental forms.
On our visit to the historic Lockwood- Matthews Mansion, we will be enjoying a 90-minute guided tour of the Mansion's majestic first floor period rooms, the second floor bedrooms and the servant's quarters.
A fun fact, the Lockwood-Matthews Mansion has been a movie set in the past. The end of the film HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS (1971) and quite a bit of THE STEPFORD WIVES (1975) was shot in the mansion.
At the conclusion of our tour, we will head to Wegman's food store (675 Connecticut Ave) which is a 10-minute drive (2 miles). We can explore the store's many departments and grab a bite to eat at their hot bar which features hot soups, Asian cuisine and chicken wings. The store also has a salad bar and makes pizza and subs for consumption in their second-floor dining area.
If you are interested in attending this OWL event, first RSVP to this email by April 3rd and then send a check for $20 to Mona Perlot, 473 Wood Hill Rd, Cheshire, 06410.
This is a rain or shine event.
Additional information on the Mansion Museum:
A national historic landmark since 1971, the Mansion is now reopened after a two-year closure for restoration. The Mansion, built between 1864 and 1868, was designed by architech Detlef Lienau for renowned, financier and railroad baron, Lagrand Lockwood and his wife, Anna Louisa. The ornate house features interiors and furnishings by such notable designers as the Herter Brothers. Leon Marcotte and George Platt.
Following Lockwood's untimely death in 1872, Charles Drelincourt Matthews, a wealthy merchant from New York, purchased the Mansion in 1876 as a summer home for his wife, Rebecca, and their four children.
The city of Norwalk purchased the property in 1941. The battle to "Save Norwalk Mansion" began in 1961, with the announcement to raze the historic structure. The Mansion designation as a national historic landmark occurred in 1971.
