About this Event
We're staying late at the Mills this Spring to bring you the Overtime Art Club sessions! Come along for relaxed evenings of drawing, collage, stitching and more - all facilitated by local emerging artists.
You're welcome to bring your own drinks to the session, we'll provide all the materials you'll need.
This season's sessions are a series of Ones to Watch specials, getting to know some of our exhibiting emerging artists and learning new skills in a relaxed setting! We are keen to help our Ones to Watch artists develop other areas of their careers outside of Gallery walls, and find many artists and makers diversify their practice through teaching workshops.
With the help of artist Charlotte Miles, this workshop will focus on Absurdist narratives, which are stories containing illogical events, characters and sometimes even lack an ending. These narratives can be translated into three-dimensional sculptures in the form of vignettes (snap shots) of the story’s climax.
By using imagery from magazines and newspapers as a foundation for our stories, we will embellish and attach them together to form illogical and surreal scenes from an Absurd narrative of your creation.
This workshop will utilise and develop skills in storytelling, imagination and enchantment, and three-dimensional thinking.
Artist Bio
By combining sculpture and painting into three-dimensional moving pieces, Charlotte Miles deliberately attempts to re-enchant the strangeness embedded in everyday life. Humorous scenarios are created by unconventional storytelling, fragmenting an overarching narrative into vignettes, leaving the meaning purposefully ambiguous for the viewer.
Drawing from Albert Camus’s philosophy of Absurdism and Thomas Nagel’s comedic remedy for meaninglessness, Charlotte finds that illogical visual imagery serves as both a coping mechanism for a futile existence and a lens through which to question the essence of reality. The genre of Fantasy and its historical legacy as an abstractive tool to navigate reality is an excellent host for Absurdist thought and investigation in Charlotte’s work. Charlotte graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2025 with an MA in Sculpture.
You can view Reeces work within the Gallery until 29th March. Read more about Ones to Watch 2025 here.
Please note - these sessions are suitable for anyone aged 18+
