The term “Great American Songbook” refers to the canon of influential American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century—timeless works that continue to shape music today. Rooted largely in Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, these songs are primarily vocal in nature.
Contemporary American Songbook will present modern vocal music that highlights the many roles of the voice in today’s jazz landscape. Music will be partially arranged or even written by the students.

Everything starts with a rhythm. A heartbeat if you like. Bob your head. Phrasing is key. Nothing is fixed though. Through proxy rhythms, surrogate grid systems, and tempo illusions, we’ve stretched, displaced, and restructured time.
We have fostered listening as an active role in the creation of this program. Simple materials, complex outcomes, but at the end, just something to bob your head to.
