Don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind experience!

Critical Minded, a grantmaking and learning initiative that supports cultural critics of color in the United States, is pleased to present the New York premiere of Out of the Picture, the first feature-length documentary about art critics to be made in the U.S.

The film explores the lives and work of five essential arts writers who have transformed the field, including Carolina Miranda, formerly of the Los Angeles Times editor-in-chief of Hyperallergic; Jen Graves, formerly of The Stranger; Jeneé Osterheldt, founder of “A Beautiful Resistance” and deputy managing editor at The Boston Globe; and independent art critic Seph Rodney.

Out of the Picture, directed by Mary Louise Schumacher, former critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, explores the precarious nature of arts writing during a period of dramatic change for both culture and media. The documentary, which received support from JustFilms, has screened in cities across the country and around the world, and has garnered several jury awards.

We are hoping the occasion of the film’s screening provides an opportunity for community for arts writers, with a reception beforehand. After the film, stick around for a conversation among journalists uniquely positioned to discuss the future of the field, including Miranda (moderator), Vartanian, Osterheldt, and Camille Bacon, writer and co-founder of Jupiter Magazine.

Advance registration by 5/14/25 is required for building entry. Registrations are non-transferrable.
