Get your walking shoes ready! Mat-Su College and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) are teaming up for the 2026 Mat-Su College Out of the Darkness Campus Walk on May 16th. It’s going to be a powerful day of community, connection, and hope as we walk together to shine a light on mental health right here in the Valley. While we’re looking forward to a day of togetherness, the reason we walk is deeply important. In Alaska, we face a silent crisis: our state ranks 2nd in the nation for suicide-related deaths. It is the #1 cause of death for young Alaskans (ages 10–24), and every year, we lose 30 of our own neighbors in the Mat-Su Valley alone.
These losses are avoidable, but only if we stop avoiding the conversation. Your involvement can change—and save—lives.
