Fri 16 January 2026 at 7.30 p.m.St Alfege Church, Greenwich SE10
As regular audience members will know, we normally celebrate the New Year with the wonderful strings of the Sinfonia, exploring the extraordinary riches of the repertoire for string orchestra. However, January 2026 is an exception to this rule (you’ll be able to hear the strings taking centre stage in February instead). We are really thrilled and honoured to welcome the Leeds Piano Competition prizewinner, Louis Schwizgebel, who will be performing solo and also directing the Sinfonia.
January 2026 also marks the beginning of the Sinfonia’s deep dive into the works of Benjamin Britten. In 2026 it will be 50 years since Britten’s death, and although the Sinfonia has performed many pieces by Britten in our time, there is still plenty of exquisite and marvellous music to be getting our teeth into. In January the concert will open with Louis and the Sinfonia strings performing the superb mini-concerto Young Apollo, before the wind and brass join us for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. And in the second half, we lose the piano but gain a conductor as Louis directs the Sinfonia in Mozart’s effervescent and stunning Symphony No. 35, known as the Haffner.
Tickets are available on the door from 7.00 p.m., or in advance from Eventbrite (link below). It’s going to be an wonderful concert – we hope to see you all then!
