Sandpit Collective returns to Rose Hill with a programme of short films, both animated and live-action, marking the closing of the Mirror for Princes season. The Sandpit Collective have been partnering with with the University of Sussex and The Rose Hill to run Other Asias programme, exploring postcolonial, feminist cinema and Maghrebi Stories. (Maghrebi refers to the Maghreb region – Arabic speaking – North West Africa which includes Morrocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libiya & Mauritania)This night is always incredibly inspiring as well as super cosy – the curator Zeina Frangie-Ayres always brings homemade saffron tea and cake, and introduces each event with an informal talk giving context to the proceeding films.
About the short film selection :
How does power live in us, even when we don’t name it?
This screening begins from a simple point. Power is not only something that sits outside of us or above us. It is also something we absorb, carry, reproduce, and at times resist.
Working through the idea of the “mirror for princes,” the programme approaches cinema as a space to examine how power operates. Not only in visible structures, but in the ways it shapes behaviour, perception, and feeling.
The films move between these registers, attending to how power becomes ordinary, how it is internalised, and how it might be unsettled.
This programme has been developed in collaboration with students from the BA Liberal Arts course at the University of Sussex, who have been involved throughout, from shaping the selection to helping organise and run the event.
The evening will begin with a short contextual introduction to the programme, followed by the screening. Afterwards, the space remains open for a collective collage session. This offers a way to respond and reflect through making.
Selected works will be brought together into a collective zine.
