Cheb HocineIt seems fair to say that no musician has done more for the spread of Raï music in Norway than the singer Cheb Hocine. The great musician has thrilled audiences all over Scandinavia, UK and France for decades. Here at home, he is perhaps most known for his collaboration with the cult jazz quartet The Source at their legendary christmas shows, where his versions of well known Norwegian christmas tunes has created many converts. Hocine comes from the Algerian port city Oran, where Raï was created when arab folk music was exposed to pop music. Raï has been dubbed the “arab blues”, and is a central part of daily life to this day. To Oslo World, Cheb brings his trio consisting of himself on vocal ?and percussion, Hassan Maroine on keyboards ?and Sankung Jobarteh on guitar ?and kora.
