Presentations:

Anchor type feasibility in carbonate soils

by Laith Tapper, NGI

Carbonate sediments are frequently encountered offshore in Australia. Their composition can vary from coarse‑grained materials to silts and muds, through to cemented sediments and limestone layers. A defining feature of many carbonate materials is the fragility of their particles and their susceptibility to significant strength degradation under cyclic loading. When selecting and designing anchors, it is essential to account for these distinctive characteristics and consider the material response during both installation and under in‑place loading. This presentation outlines key geotechnical drivers that influence anchor feasibility for commonly used anchor types in carbonate sediments and illustrates these considerations with project examples.

Drag anchors in Australia: design and Installation challenges

by Júlia Hein Mazutti, Delmar

Designing and installing drag anchors on the Australian continental shelf involves navigating a combination of geotechnical uncertainty, operational constraints, and tight project schedules. Engineers often work with limited early-stage site data, while addressing challenging seabed conditions such as cemented soils and surface rock. This presentation outlines key considerations affecting anchor performance and installation, including slippage risks, proof loading practices, vessel limitations, and weather constraints. It also reflects on the interaction between design assumptions and offshore execution, drawing on field experience to highlight practical approaches to managing uncertainty across both engineering and operations.

Pile anchors in Australia: recent installation challenges

by Manuel Herduin, Subsea 7

This presentation reviews two recent Australian case studies involving the design, fabrication, and offshore installation of pile anchors. It focusses on the challenges encountered during the offshore execution phase. Drawing on real installation campaign experiences, the presentation highlights key challenges such as installation tolerance, vessel preparation and modification for the installation, soil variability, handling of large‑diameter piles, and the impact of offshore weather windows on operational efficiency. The presentation concludes with several lessons learned to improve future pile anchor installations.
