The St. James Music Series presents a rare Organ Duet Recital featuring award-winning organists Bryan Anderson and Yuri McCoy, visiting from Houston for this special program. The program is built around contrapuntal writing and large-scale musical architecture, anchored by Beethoven’s monumental Grosse Fuge, a work of extraordinary intensity and invention. Heard on the organ and performed as a duet, the music’s drive, complexity, and dramatic momentum come sharply into focus. The recital also includes substantial contemporary works and virtuosic selections, showcasing the full range of color, power, and precision possible when two performers share a single console. Highlights include music by the late Canadian composer-organist Rachel Laurin, a set of dazzling variations on Paganini’s 24th Caprice by McCoy, and a brilliant toccata to close the program.
Organ duet recitals are rare, and this program brings together demanding repertoire, bold musical ideas, and two performers with the technical command and musical insight to make it compelling from start to finish.
