About Operation Raise a Flag

Each year before Remembrance Day, Operation Raise a Flag plants 30,000 Canadian and Indigenous flags around the Veterans Centre and across the Bayview campus to honour the Veterans who call Sunnybrook home.

The Indigenous flag features the artwork of Indigenous artist Philip Cote to recognize and honour the sacrifices and contributions made by First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans in service to Canada.

Operation Raise a Flag is our way of showing our Veterans that we appreciate the sacrifice they made, and we have not forgotten.

Sunnybrook Foundation is looking for community volunteers to participate in the Operation Raise a Flag planting event on Monday, November 10, 2025 between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Volunteer shifts are often quite quick and usually take approximately 30 minutes, including time to check-in and completing the planting of flags. Each volunteer will be given a bundle of approximately 25-50 flags to plant in the area designated by their team captain. This is a rain or shine event, and volunteers are encouraged to dress according to the weather conditions.

Join us Monday, November 10, 2025

Time: 30-minute time period between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Location: Volunteer check-in at McLaughlin Auditorium, E-Wing Ground Floor

You can choose a 30 minute time slot below which will be your check in time.

After signing up, you will receive updates and sign in instructions via email prior to Friday, November 7. If you have any questions, or would like to coordinate a larger group, please contact Dazzle Cortel at [email protected]

Complimentary parking pass is available at volunteer check-in.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS

We are pleased to welcome volunteers from the community back to plant flags again this year in a limited capacity. A portion of flags will be planted earlier in the day by Sunnybrook staff.

Children under the age of 12 will require adult supervision. We welcome youth groups like Scouts, Guides and Cadets to plant flags. If you are organizing a youth group as volunteers, please keep this in mind as you may need to enlist the support of additional volunteers.
