On his return home from the Trojan War, Idomeneo, King of Crete, is caught with his ship in a violent storm. Amid the turbulent waves and looming cliffs, he makes a terrible vow to Neptune, the god of the sea: if he and his men are spared, he will sacrifice the first person he encounters on dry land. When Idomeneo washes up on a beach in Crete and lays eyes on his own child, Idamante, he finds himself plunged in a veritable nightmare.
With Idomeneo, the 25-year-old Mozart made his major breakthrough as an opera composer. With its unbridled lyricism, richly varied arias and emotional depth, the opera is ideally suited to conductor Enrico Onofri. Director Calixto Bieito will dive into the labyrinthine head of Idomeneo, where memories ebb and flow, as if from the depths of the sea.

Faisant voile vers son royaume de Crète à l’issue de la guerre de Troie, Idomeneo est pris dans une violente tempête. Au milieu des flots déchaînés et des récifs menaçants, il fait une terrible promesse à Neptune, le dieu de la mer : si lui et son équipage s’en sortent sains et saufs, il sacrifiera la première personne qu’il verra à son arrivée. Alors qu’il reprend son souffle sur une plage nacrée de Crète, Idomeneo se retrouve face à son propre fils, Idamante, et plonge en plein cauchemar.
Avec Idomeneo, Mozart signe, à vingt-cinq ans, son premier grand succès à l’opéra. Cette œuvre, au lyrisme flamboyant, aux arias chatoyantes et à la grande profondeur émotionnelle, sied à merveille au chef d’orchestre Enrico Onofri. Quant au metteur en scène, Calixto Bieito, il nous plongera dans la tête d’Idomeneo, un labyrinthe où les souvenirs déferlent, comme surgis des abysses.

Op de terugweg van de Trojaanse oorlog komt Idomeneo, de koning van Kreta, met zijn schip terecht in een hevige storm. Te midden van de onstuimige golven en dreigende kliffen doet hij een vreselijke gelofte aan de zeegod Neptunus: als hij en zijn mannen gespaard blijven, offert hij de eerste mens op die hij aan land tegenkomt. Wanneer Idomeneo naar adem hapt op het parelende strand van Kreta en er zijn eigen kind in de ogen kijkt, belandt hij in een ware nachtmerrie.
Met Idomeneo maakte de vijfentwintigjarige Mozart zijn grote doorbraak als operacomponist. Het werk is, met zijn ongebreidelde lyriek, rijkgeschakeerde aria’s en emotionele diepgang, een kolfje naar de hand van dirigent Enrico Onofri. Regisseur Calixto Bieito duikt in het labyrintische hoofd van Idomeneo, waar herinneringen af- en aanspoelen als uit de afgrondelijke diepte van de zee.
