Join us on November 29th at 6:00 PM for the opening ceremony of Radical Stitch. This exhibition is the largest survey of contemporary Indigenous beadwork ever presented on Turtle Island/North America, featuring artists from Canada and the United States.
Curator Emma Hassencahl-Perley will deliver the opening remarks on behalf of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, followed by comments from curators Sherry Farrell Racette, Michelle LaVallee, and Cathy Mattes. Special guests Elder Ramona Nicholas and the Wolostoqey Grand Chief will deliver the official address.
Enjoy performances by dancers Abby Brooks and Kyana Kingbird, as well as drumming by the Muskrat Singers.
The works in Radical Stitch encompass a range of mediums, including wearable art, portraiture, installation, and video. These pieces connect the past and present while imagining new worlds. With humor, poignant testimony, and rich political and social commentary, this exciting exhibition explores the contemporary and transformative context of beading through the innovative works of artists and the tactile beauty of the medium.
This exhibition is organized and circulated by the MacKenzie Art Gallery, which receives ongoing support from the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, SaskCulture, City of Regina, University of Regina, and the Saskatchewan Arts Board. The tour is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
