Drive-byArtist: Dan Murphy
November 8 – 23, Sat/Sun, 11 - 5pm
Opening Friday, November 7, 6 - 8pm
The Central Australian landscape captured me many years ago. I was drawn to the wide open spaces and the majestic ranges, eventually moving to Alice Springs in the early 90s. The landscape, while often looking sparse and empty, is full of secrets and stories if you get close enough. And when you spend time up close your own stories can become tangled in the web.
These works are made from materials found in the landscape, I cut and hammer and sew the various pieces together to create a new landscape, trying to make sense of, or build a raft to get me across this sea of stories.
Dan Murphy’s 35 years as a sculptor in metal has provided amusing, intriguing, spectacular and moving pieces drawn, like his materials, from his surroundings in Central Australia. His imagination follows lateral paths to destinations which range from the deeply funny to the profoundly poetic.
Dan’s work is held in high regard. He has an extensive history of successful solo exhibitions and is represented in many public and private collections including; Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin, the Araluen Centre for the Arts, Alice Springs, and The Art Gallery of South Australia.
