Backbends in the yoga asana practice can be intimidating. Oftentimes in a 1 hour class there is not enough time or the ability for your teacher to assist each individual student as they navigate moving into backbends like wheel pose. Giving yourself extra time in this 90 minute practice will not only open your body and mind but allow for that much time to explore these postures with the assistance of a seasoned instructor. Many of us have fears related to backbends often rooted in the concern of injury. This is the "why” behind this event. Your guide Sarah has been teaching yoga for ten years and when she came to the yoga practice backbends were not accessible for her due to her low back disc herniations. This overcoming of a contraindicated series of postures led to her desire in understanding and unlocking the secrets to backbending with grace. While skill and strength are needed to build these postures the most important piece is to understand and listen to your body.
Sarah will guide you through how to access a variety of backbends. Together we will work on Ustrasana: Camel, Setu Bandha Sarvangasana: Bridge and Urdhva Dhanurasana: Wheel. These postures will be made accessible through thoughtful and intention warm up and practice to prepare your body physically but also to cultivate inward awareness so you can practice listening to your body. We will utilize props, mindful queuing and hands on assists to support your understanding of entering, exiting and stabilizing between and after the posture, creating a supportive environment for your own unique understanding of your body in these challenging poses.
