About this Event

Come to the fire.

Connecticut sent more men into the American Revolution than nearly any other colony — and someone had to feed them. Join us on the grounds of the Stanley-Whitman House on Saturday, May 16, at 12:00 PM for Open Fire Cooking: Revolutionary War Camp Cooking, an outdoor living-history demonstration with Dennis Picard.

Soldiers in the Continental Army were promised daily rations. What they actually received was another matter. Around an open fire, Dennis will demonstrate how troops made do with what they had — dried peas, flour, turnips, and the ingenuity of people who had no other choice. Come ready to watch, ask questions, and taste.

Food in colonial Connecticut was shaped by religious beliefs, tradition, geography, and the rhythms of the growing season. Each region developed its own dietary habits, and the soldiers who marched from the Connecticut River Valley carried those traditions with them into camp. This program explores that story through the most direct means possible: cooking and eating it.

This is a rain-or-shine outdoor program. Dress for the weather.

Open Fire Cooking is part of our America 250 programming, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence with programs that bring the everyday lives of ordinary people — soldiers, families, and communities — into vivid focus.
