About this Event
In April, the Berkeley Art Center will launch the Open Center, expanding how we use our space beyond traditional gallery exhibitions. The Open Center will serve as a hub where ideas, artists, and community intersect, offering opportunities for interdisciplinary, intercultural, and inter-philosophical dialogue, reflection, and activation.
OPEN CENTER: No Buy Your Wardrobe
Are you a novice sewist interested in improving your sewing skills, or folks who want more control over their clothing options? Check out this workshop!
WHAT: This Skill Share will allow participants to learn basic concepts of sewing and mending their clothes. We will create space for discussion to develop better textile material awareness in understanding what kinds of materials go into our clothes, and encourage attendees on how to style and share our sense of fashion in a way that is not only eco-friendly but also budget-conscious!
WHY: Californians throw away 1.2 million tons of textiles a year, and San Franciscans send 4,500 pounds of textiles to landfill every hour. How can we practice repairing clothes to make them live longer?
Please bring an item to mend! For example, a piece of clothing, a cloth bag! Or bring an item to swap! If you are looking to give away a piece of clothing that no longer suits you, feel free to bring it to the clothing swap.
RSVP required. Limited spots.
Free and open to all.
Donations are welcome.*
