In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage- until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious illness. "Radium Girls" by D.W. Gregory traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. This play is an ensemble piece with many roles available. Some roles will be doubled. Roles include the women in the factory, the company men, the women's family and friends, the advocates, the scientists, the press, the witnesses, and others.
All levels of acting experience are welcome. If you have ever thought about auditioning for a play, this is a golden opportunity for you! Auditions will consist of readings from the script. A copy of the script is available at the Danville Public Library. But you need not be familiar with the script to audition.
This play will be directed by Nancy Henderson.
Performance dates are March 13-15, March 20-22. Tech week begins March 8.
