Uraufführung vom „rising star“ der Tanzwelt: Ausgehend vom Ballett entwirft Oona Doherty ein brutal-schönes Gegenwartspanorama voller Moves und Assoziationen – mit Musik von Rachmaninow und Jamie **.Mit großer Wucht katapultierte sich Oona Doherty mit ihren energiegeladenen und mehrfach ausgezeichneten Arbeiten über Identität, Klasse und Gender an den Himmel der Tanzwelt. So auch zuletzt 2020 auf dem Sommerfestival, wo sie mit HOPE HUNT in einem virtuosen und hochgelobten Solo die Zerbrechlichkeit männlicher Gesten aufzeigte. NAVY BLUE ist nun Dohertys erste Arbeit für die große Bühne, eine düstere Choreografie für zwölf, in ganz Europa gecasteten Tänzer*innen. Ausgehend von Sergei Rachmaninows Klavierkonzert Nr. 2, in dem er seine Depression und ihre Überwindung verarbeitete, überträgt Doherty das klassische Ideal von Krise und Erlösung in die Gegenwart: Den Gleichklang des klassischen Balletts durchzieht sie mit einem existenziellen Grauen, das erst im Moment der Wiedergeburt, durch den Versuch der Freiheit und die Hoffnung auf eine neue Zukunft abgelöst wird. Ihr Stil ist wütend und trotzig bis an die körperliche Schmerzgrenze, aber immer auch empfindsam und zärtlich, selbstbewusst und auf der Suche nach meditativer Heilung. So ist NAVY BLUE, das mit einer Vielzahl internationaler Partner zur Eröffnung des Sommerfestivals uraufgeführt wird, in all seiner Abgründigkeit auch ein Appell an die Schönheit des Lebens und an gesellschaftlichen Wandel.

With great impact, Oona Doherty catapulted to the skies of the dance world with her energetic and award winning works about identity, class and gender. At the Summer Festival 2020, she exposed the fragility of male gestures in the virtuosic and highly acclaimed solo HOPE HUNT. NAVY BLUE is Doherty’s first work for the big stage, a dark choreography for twelve dancers cast throughout Europe and original music by Jamie **. Based on Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, that reflects his own depression and its overcoming, she translates the classical ideal of crisis and redemption into the present: the unison of the classical ballet is flavored with fear and dragged through an existential dread. Until a re-birth emerges, an attempt of freedom, of salvation, of future is re-stated. Doherty’s work is angry and defiant to the point of physical pain, but always also sensitive and tender, self-aware and in search of meditative healing. Thus, NAVY BLUE, which will be premiered with a multitude of international partners as the festival’s opening, with all its abyss is also an appeal to the beauty of life and for social change.
