About this Event
ONS Local has been established by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to support evidence-based decision-making at the local level. We aim to host insightful events that connect our users with exciting developments happening in subnational statistics and analysis at the ONS and across other organisations. Caitlin Schmid is a Research Fellow at King’s Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London.
Despite considerable progress over past decades, gender inequalities persist in the United Kingdom and mounting evidence suggests that socio-economic outcomes vary by local area. Effective policy to reduce inequalities requires an understanding of how women’s and men’s lives differ depending on where they live.
The first of its kind, the UK Gender Equality Index (UKGEI) offers an innovative tool for measuring, mapping, and monitoring gender differences across the 374 local authority districts in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Combining existing data, the UKGEI measures outcomes across six domains: Paid Work, Unpaid Work, Money, Education, Health, and Power & Participation. In addition to measuring differences between genders, the UKGEI indicates how women and men respectively are faring locally compared to the rest of the UK. Visualised on an interactive website, the evidence benefits advocacy, research, and policy intervention aimed at improving women's and men's lives across the four nations.
This event is open to all; we anticipate it will be of most interest to anyone working on gender inequality at a local level.
