6-Week ‘SAFER PADDLE’ Paddleboarding Programme
Location: Broughty Ferry Beach
Duration: 6 weeks
Session Length: 1.5hours per session
Level: Total beginners
Goal: To safely and confidently paddle on flat and open water, with strong technique, self-rescue skills, and control in light windy conditions
Week 1: Getting Started – Equipment, Safety & Basic Paddle Skills
Introduction to paddleboarding gear: boards, paddles, leashes, buoyancy aids
Safe launching and landing techniques
Kneeling position: posture and stability
Basic paddling strokes (forward, stopping, turning)
Short paddle while kneeling
Week 2: Standing Up & Self-Rescue
Techniques for standing up safely
Foot placement and balance while standing
Controlled falls and how to re-mount your board
Practice paddling standing in calm water
Balance drills and building confidence
Week 3: Steering, Turning & Straight Line Paddling
Sweep stroke, reverse stroke, and J-stroke
Steering and control while standing
Group paddling awareness
Challenge: paddle a straight line to a set point and back
Week 4: Building Endurance & Handling Light Conditions
Extended paddle (up to 2–3 km depending on group and conditions)
Adapting to light wind and choppier water
Technique focus: paddle cadence, efficiency, and body alignment
Continued self-rescue practice in deeper water
Week 5: Open Water Confidence & Skill Refinement
Open water paddle route (e.g., exploring along Broughty Ferry’s coastline)
Improving maneuvering and stopping control in changing water conditions
Reading the water: identifying wind direction and safer paddling lines
Group communication and awareness on open water
Week 6: Final Challenge Paddle & Skills Mastery
Recap and review of key skills
Final paddle challenge (longer route with turns and navigation points)
Optional mini skill demo or confidence check
Programme Outcome -
By the end of the 6 weeks, you’ll have developed solid paddleboarding skills, confidence, and the ability to handle different water conditions, including gentle moving water. This is the perfect introduction for beginners looking to progress in a safe and structured way! Bonus feature - Lots of new paddleboarding pals!
