The City of North Charleston is officially beginning the process of creating a Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), a major effort that will modernize and simplify the city’s development regulations while helping guide future growth across the community. The UDO will bring together the city’s zoning, land development, and related regulations into one updated rulebook designed to better reflect the needs of North Charleston today and for decades to come. The initiative will build upon the vision established through the city’s comprehensive planning efforts and will focus heavily on public engagement and community input throughout the process.
City leaders are encouraging residents, business owners, neighborhood groups, developers, and community stakeholders to participate and help shape the future of North Charleston.
“Community input is critical to this process,” said Mayor Reggie Burgess. “The decisions made through this ordinance will impact how our city grows, develops, and preserves the character of our neighborhoods. We want residents to be part of that conversation from the very beginning.”
A Unified Development Ordinance is intended to streamline and modernize development regulations by combining multiple ordinances and standards into one, user-friendly document. The process will help create clear development standards while supporting responsible growth, economic opportunity, and neighborhood preservation throughout North Charleston.
