Since 1979, Star Trek has boldly gone where few TV franchises had gone before — onto the big screen. Across thirteen films, the series has reinvented itself again and again, with varying degrees of success. This course takes a critical and celebratory look at Star Trek in cinemas, asking how well the franchise translated from television, why some instalments soared while others flopped, and how the more recent revivals have captured (or reimagined) the essence of Trek.Across three hours, we will explore the artistry, politics, and cultural legacy of the Star Trek films, from The Motion Picture through the beloved Wrath of Khan and First Contact, to J.J. Abrams’ glossy reboots and beyond. The course will include moments of discussion and film analysis, as we ask: was cinema truly the final frontier for Star Trek, or does its heart remain on the small screen?
