About this Event
Once Upon a Time in Nubian Square
A Walking Tour Through Boston’s Lost Cultural Hubs
Step into the heart of Boston’s Black history as we journey through Lower Roxbury and the South End—exploring what happened once upon a time in Nubian Square.
Led by the Afrimerican Academy, this walking tour traces the evolution of Nubian Square (formerly Dudley Square), once a thriving hub of music, business, and community life. We’ll uncover stories of cultural brilliance, urban renewal, and the resilience that continues to define Roxbury today.
From jazz clubs to trolley lines, and from the elevated Orange Line to the historic Boston Neck, each stop tells a story of a neighborhood that helped shape Boston’s identity.

🌍 About the Tour
Part of Boston Redline 88 (BRL88) — a month-long Black History Month event series — this tour highlights how redlining and redevelopment shaped Nubian Square’s landscape and spirit.
Walk with us as we rediscover Boston’s “wishbone,” where Washington and Warren Streets once connected communities through commerce, art, and activism — before highways and policy reshaped the terrain.
