Once in a Blue Moon Twilight HikeSaturday, May 30, 2026 | 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Join us for a magical evening under the stars at the McKaig Nature Education Center!
This special twilight hike celebrates the rare "Blue Moon"—the second full moon in the month of May (following the Flower Moon on May 1st). While the moon won't actually turn blue (that's a myth!), this calendrical wonder—happening only about every 2–3 years—marks an extra lunar gift in 2026, perfectly timed for a memorable night in nature.
We'll kick things off at 8:00 PM with a refreshing treat: cool blue water ice to enjoy as we gather. Once our tongues are delightfully blue (proof we're ready for the adventure!), we'll set off on a gentle uphill hike to our prime moonrise viewpoint at the top of the Nature Center. There, as the sky darkens, we'll watch the nearly full Blue Moon rise in all its glowing glory, bathing the landscape in silvery light.
While we soak in the serene views, listen for the calls of owls, frogs, and other nocturnal woodland creatures awakening for the night. Along the way, we'll pause for fun, bite-sized facts about Blue Moons, lunar cycles, native wildlife, and the wonders of our local ecosystem.
This easy-to-moderate 1.5-hour, ~1.5 mile and 220 verticle feet gain, guided hike is perfect for families, couples, and nature lovers—no special gear needed beyond comfortable walking shoes, and a red flashlight or red headlamp if you'd like.
Space is limited—registration mandetory!
Cost: $12/adult member, $15/adult non-member, $3/child under 16
Don't miss this "once in a blue moon" opportunity to connect with the night sky and our beautiful preserve. We can't wait to share the magic with you!
