Methuseleh started out as a two-piece band formed in 2020. A third band member joined early in 2025.
The members are Paul Stevenson, Nico Kruger (married to Paul’s sister Mary) and Maurice Magner.
The idea for the band originated from casual discussion in 2015 before Nico retired from a long corporate career – the guys decided it might be good to play some music under the name of Methuselah (as in the oldest man in the bible) because by the time the band would get going they would be getting pretty old!
Paul grew up in Stellenbosch and has played in various bands, duos and solo over the years. He plays guitar, harmonica and sings.
Nico grew up in Joburg and only got serious about playing after retirement, after dabbling with the guitar since school. Nico’s daughter is a professional musician living in Berlin and touring Europe as Lucy Kruger and the Lost Boys (she regularly plays at café Roux when she is in South Africa).
Maurice, like Paul, has had a long history of playing in various groups. He is also active as a singer in a choir.
The band plays covers of well known rock, folk and country songs with a few lesser known songs and a bit of original material thrown in. Artists covered include Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen. Paul has programmed all of the bass and drum tracks with a DR3 drum machine – no back tracks from the internet!
The name of the band is a slightly misspelled version of the original name – at the first gig the band played in late 2020 the promotional poster was printed with the spelling with an “e” instead of an “a” which stuck
The guys all live in the Noordhoek area.
'On The Verge'
‘On The Verge’ is a community greening and gardening project.
Our mission is to enhance the beauty of Noordhoek by creating gardens and planting trees in public spaces and along main road verges that are not cared for by specific homeowners. We are also dedicated to providing job security for our team of men and try to acquire additional work for them in the Neighbourhood. Our team of 7 gardeners can be seen every Wednesday digging, weeding or planting somewhere along the roadsides. We have to date planted about 100 trees and gardened over 35 verges. We help with alien clearing and have extended, maintained and provided signage for various walking and riding paths. We have revamped and maintained the historic Village Lane Post-Office Garden and planted trees in two play parks. We work in conjunction with CCT Nature Conservation, and our local municipality, tackling the public open spaces, opening overgrown paths and greening some of these underutilised and forgotten spaces. We also organise a monthly hacking group removing invasive aliens in the surrounding mountains. We rely on donations from the public as well as the proceeds of our annual Noordhoek Open Gardens event, to pay the guy’s salaries.
