About this Event
Providing a rare opportunity to visit Barts Pathology Museum, this site-specific installation of new film and sculpture by contemporary British artist Janetka Platun responds to the Museum’s own historic collection of tooth specimens dating back to the 19th century. These 24 specimens and their accompanying index cards, that form the ‘Diseases of Teeth’ collection, provide an insight into the range of problems faced by patients, and the (often brutal) history of dentistry in England.
The film and sculptural artworks in the installation are based on thousands of microtomography scans of these tooth specimens produced by Dr David Mills, a researcher at Queen Mary University of London. The installation explores the inner world of teeth as sites of memory, loss and survival.
Janetka Platun’s artistic practice incorporates film, sculpture and installation. In her work she poses questions about our existential relationship with our surroundings. Her work attends to the inter-relational complexities of people, place, time, memory and desire. She is based in London.
The installation offers a rare opportunity to visit this special medical museum which is not normally open to members of the public. Tickets are free, but must be booked in hour-long slots
Please note that if you are visiting on Thursday 4th December, a Long Table event will be taking place within the installation. Visitors to the installation at this time are invited to take part, which will develop a participatory conversation around teeth as sites of memory.
