Omalos to Kallergi Refuge Hike – Samaria Gorge, Crete
Experience one of the most scenic hiking routes in the White Mountains of Crete, following a dramatic ridgeline above the famous Samaria Gorge.
This guided hike starts from Xyloskalo (Omalos Plateau), the main entrance to Samaria Gorge, and leads to the stunning Kallergi Refuge, offering breathtaking views deep into the gorge and across the Lefka Ori mountains.
The Route
We meet at Xyloskalo at 10:00am, at the entrance to Samaria Gorge.
From here, we follow a well-defined mountain trail climbing steadily along the ridgeline above the gorge. The route offers spectacular panoramic views and a true sense of being high in the White Mountains.
Reaching the Kallergi Refuge, we take time to rest and enjoy the views. If the refuge is open, there is the option to stop for a refreshing drink.
We then begin our descent, initially following a dirt road before reconnecting with the trail for the final section back to Xyloskalo.

Elevation gain: approx. 500 m
Duration: 3–4 hours depending on pace and stops
